swades2NBJK has launched a residential training program “Skills for Life” among youths with support of Swades Foundation-Mumbai. This provides training in three trades – Basic Computer Applications, Electronics & Hardware (mobile/CFL bulb/charger repair) and Bed Side Patient Attendant or BSPA. Its target group is remote village youths in need of vocational & soft-skill training but can’t join any Day-Scholar program in lack of transport facility and resources to meet daily taxi/bus/food expenses. The program accommodates disadvantaged rural youths (mostly middle school passed or non-matric) with post-training support for placement or self-employment.

Skills for Life comprises youths both male and female between age group of 15 to 25 years. Currently first batch of 49 youths (BCA-19, Electronics & Hardware-05 and BSPA-24) have been enrolled to get training of two months duration (full time residential). They belong to BPL families from far-flung villages of Hazaribag, Chatra, Giridih, Koderma, Ranchi, Palamu districts of Jharkhand. The program aims to train 540 youths in 9 batches during the period of 18 months. Besides, this will encourage and enroll 3% youths with disability for training. A token fee of Rs.1000 is chargeable with each enrollment to avoid undesired trainees not in immediate need of job/employment.

NBJK’s long association with the sector is a plus point for the program. It’s linkage with about 150 employers/industries will ensure placement for the trainees. Also these employers provide feedback about required competencies and help trainees through special classes and OJT (On-Job Training) at their enterprises. Soft-skills packages, short videos as well as smart classes’ tools are available to develop confidence, personality and other soft skills required for these youth to compete in job market.  Also NBJK will track the youths after placement or self-employment for at least 6 months and provide work-place solutions to them.

avi211-12 November, Ichak-Hazaribag: An event of quiz around disability was organized among students of class IX at Project Girls’ High School, Ichak under the program on Disability Rights by NBJK with support of AVI-BLF, UK. There were 81 girl children participated in the event and came across knowledge with sensitization over the issue of disability highlighted through the quiz. Mrs. Sujata Prasad (Program Manager) and school teachers have encouraged the girls and distributed prize among the girls like Beauty, Kavita, Shweta, Neha, Priya standing as first to fifth positions as per their performance.

On 12th, Disable Persons Organization (DPO) meeting was convened in premises of Sadar Hospital, Hazaribag. Mr. Rajkumar (President, Viklang Vikas Jankalyan Sangh, Sadar Block) has presided over the meeting called to discuss celebration of World Disability Day on 3rd December. There were 54 PwDs from Sadar, Katkamsaandi, Katkamdaag, Ichak, Churchu, Keredari, Daroo blocks of Hazaribag district. During the DPO meeting, it was planned to organize a sports event on the day at the playground in front of St. Columba’s College, Hazaribag.

Also the DPO members have called a representative from Certification section of Sadar Hospital to discuss the lethargic process for issuance of Disability Certificate. These members were much angry and asked the concerned official for cooperation. They demanded for appointment of any specific doctor to issue Railway Pass for them.

fcc210 November, Hazaribag: NBJK run Family Counseling Center has called it’s Sub-Committee members in the meeting held at Women’s Police Station, Hazaribag. This was chaired by Mrs. Ameltina Ekka (Officer In-Charge) and attended by Mrs. Sharmila Hansda (ASI) Mr. Tulsi Dubey, Mr. Arvind Jha, Mrs. Usha Devi, Mrs. Sharda Devi, Mrs. Jubli (All Members) and Mr. Sanjay Kumar (Counselor). Mrs. Meera Gupta (Senior Counselor) has informed the members about number and nature of cases, FCC has received during the period of August-October 2016.

There are 30 cases registered in the quarter as for Marital Disputes between Couples (11), Interference by In-Laws (05), Alcoholism (05), Property (01), Extra-marital (05), Dowry (01) and Domestic Violence (02). She has presented a brief report upon the activities and actions taken regarding amicable solution for such cases and said that 13 cases have been solved with initiatives taken by the FCC. Most of the Sub-committee members have suggested for promoting mutual understanding to safeguard delicate relationship and to strengthen family bond towards an inclusive society.

Mrs. Ameltina Ekka (OIC) has appreciated FCC for its timely intervention as well as social outlook to address domestic problems around women and children. Mrs. Meera Gupta (Counselor) has thanked Sub-committee members and Central/Jharkhand State Social Welfare Boards for supporting FCC in Hazaribag.

lbhc210 November, Bodhgaya: The orphan children of Lord Buddha Home for Children have received many gifts of their daily use via Amazon company under Gift a Smile program by CAF India.

12 children have got nutri-drinks/food, 22 had a chance to get soap & detergent, book/drawing book/color/pen/pencil went to 7 children while remaining children have obtained toothpaste and other gift items.

Total 49 children were benefitted under this support program and they have thanked their sponsors for the gifts, Mr. T. P. Singh (Asst. Manager, LBHC) has informed and said that LBHC management expresses sincere gratitude to the individuals whose contribution makes orphan children happy. Also he appreciated the children wise enough to know the value of love and motivation for a higher goal.

childline29 November, Chouparan:  In that fine morning, Childline 1098 was informed about an unknown girl child wandering in the streets of village Beddhna-Bara on Chouparan-Chatra Road. Mr. Mahesh Kumar Gupta, a vigilant villager has called to 1098, the toll free number of Childline about the child and waited till arrival of Childline team members Mr. Narayan Rajak and Mrs. Punam Devi who found the child safe under their protection. They were supported by local people and the child was taken for medical test at Community Hospital at Chouparan block headquarters. She was declared safe and all right by the doctors.

Then Childline team has reached to Chouparan Police Station to inquire about whereabouts of the girl child as she couldn’t be able to say anything concrete about herself. In the meantime, this news was flashed by NBJK volunteers and link persons in adjacent villages. Finally, they could find family members of the child in village Chakrasaar, about 4 km distant from village Beddhna, where she was noticed by Mahesh, the man who has informed Childline to take action. The child was recognized as Nandini Kumari, who came with her mother Babita Devi at maternal grandma place in village Chakrasaar during Chhath festival. Mr. Prakash Prajapati & Mrs. Dasiaa Devi are her maternal grandparents and they all were much worried naturally.

At 4 pm, they reached at Chouparan Police Station with local PRI members and proper Identity Proof to receive Nandini. She was handed over to her guardians carefully under auspices of Childline 1098 run by NBJK in this area.

avi2October, Hazaribag: Under Disability Rights Program with support of AVI-BLF (UK), NBJK has organized 8 quiz events during October with school students in Hazaribag, Koderma, Gaya and Giridih districts. Each district team was responsible to hold 2 quizzes in government Middle/High schools on disability issues. In Nawada district, this couldn’t be possible due to school holidays during Durga Pooja and other festivals.

Also the program team has organized vision test camps for school going children and 92 CWDs (Gaya-12, Hzb-31 and Koderma-49) have been identified for sight related problems. Most of the children can be cured with spectacles and we will line up with LNJP Eye Hospital, Chouparan soon for such specialized support, Mrs. Sujata Prasad (Program Manager) has informed.

Block level media advocacy meetings were held Barachatti (Gaya), Gandeya (Giridih), Markachcho (Koderma) during the month and 299 participants including BDO, CDPO, MLA Representative, Medical Officer, Media People, PRI Members, DPO/DSHG Members etc. have attended  these meetings to discuss entitlements and services to PwDs. All they have assured for cooperation and supported the program focused upon Rights to PwDs.

2 November, Koderma: Ms. Savitri Kumari (23 years), an orthopedically disadvantaged young girl from Village-Kolgarma, Panchayat-Kolgarma, Block-Koderma, and District-Koderma (Jharkhand) was identified as a beneficiary under Disability Rights Program by NBJK with support of AVI-BLF,UK. She is fifth daughter of her farmer parents Mrs. Sauli Devi and Mr. Dwarika Yadav.

As Savitri grown up with crutches and got education till intermediate amid challenges, she was promoted under the program of Disability Rights in Koderma district by NBJK. When Savitri was offered any skill development training, she opted for tailoring and Mrs. Kanchan Singh (NBJK field worker) has arranged trainers within her access. Also she was encouraged to join Self-Help Group for Disabled People namely Krishna Viklang Vikas Samuh in her area. Now Savitri earns Rs. 1500-2000 per month by making clothes and tailoring training for adolescent girls in her village.

She has applied for government support under Swami Vivekanand Pension Scheme for PwDs in Jharkhand. Savitri thanks NBJK for such back-up. Mr. Vinod Rana (District Coordinator, NBJK) has appreciated the young girl who didn’t surrender before obstacles and became an inspiration for many more.

LBHC226 October, Bodhgaya: SKB-the Netherlands founded and NBJK managed Lord Buddha Home for Children, Bodhgaya has received 24 kinds of different toys and game items in 51 numbers for its children from Karuna-Shechen, Bodhgaya. The orphan children of LBHC have got racket, bat, shuttle cork, flying disk, doll, football, kaleidoscope, ludo and many other toys to play and enjoy together.

During a formal ceremony, Mr. Tripurari Prasad Singh (Assistant Program Manager, LBHC) has distributed the toys among children of Lord Buddha Home for Children and briefed about children oriented works of Karuna-Shechen, founded by Mr. Matthieu Ricard in 2000 and provides health care, education and social services for the under-served people of India, Nepal and Tibet. On behalf of the LBHC management and children, Mr. Singh has thanked Karuna-Shechen for such contribution to make children delighted and cheerful at LBHC.

The children were much happy to get the toys of interest and expressed their feelings of joy by playing with those together.

AVI226-27 October, Hazaribag: An orientation training was organized for the office-bearers of Disable Self-Help Groups and concerned volunteers/project staffs under Disability Rights program with support of AVI-BLF, UK. Mrs. Sujata Prasad (Program Manager) has initiated the occasion and called DSHGs as a tool helpful to self-reliance of PwDs. A strong SHG by challenged people can be a platform for them to dilute their complexities differently, she assured the trainees.

As the resource person, Mr. Sudhir Upadhyay (Dist. Manager, SHGs) has introduced the theme of sustainability within SHGs and discussed about membership, meeting minutes, leaders & their roles, saving, internal lending, bye-laws etc. Also he talked about illiteracy, minimum accounting, fund management and collective decision for groups, where they may face problem to run smoothly. On second day, Mr. Ashutosh Mishra (State Coordinator, SHGs) and Mr. Vikas Mishra (Loan Officer, SHGs) have demonstrated over documentation of group activities through Passbook, Saving & Loan Register, Interest Calculation & Recording, Bank Linkage etc. They insisted for commitment by group members towards longevity of any SHG being operational under the program of Disability Rights.

There were 39 participants from Giridih and Hazaribag districts in the training. Mr. Annu Kumar, Mr. Om Prakash Gupta, Mr. Sujit Mishra, Mr. Santosh Gautam and Mr. Shailendra Sharma have supported for preparation. Remaining office-bearers of DSHGs from Gaya, Nawada and Koderma districts will get the orientation in November 2016.

sense225 October, Hazaribag: A joyful outing was organized for deafblind children under the program of Services for them with support of Sense India, Ahmedabad. There were 40 children and their parents/carers in the event organized at Swarn Jayanti Park Cafeteria campus in Hazaribag.

Md. Nayeem (Asst. Program Manager) has led them for this picnic and said that such children deserve outing to share their feelings, mostly blocked within four walls of their houses. At the park, all children and their parents have participated in interesting activities like drawing, games, swings and others. All they talked to each other, spent quality time and had a tasteful lunch together. NBJK provides them home/center based services for activities of daily living, physiotherapy, reading/writing skills, braille script, sign language, communication, cognition, socialization etc. and cooperate with their parents for caring of such children.

Its significant that NBJK has been working with deafblind children since the year 2009 under guidance of Sense India and trying to reduce daily hurdles from innocent lives. Mr. Paras Nath Mahto (Special Teacher), Mr. Mukesh Kumar Suman (Physiotherapist), Mrs. Rashmi Parveen, Mrs. Tanuja Khatoon and Mrs. Indu Gupta (Field Staffs) have contributed to the event.
